What it actually does
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel io_uring implementation allows a local attacker to corrupt kernel memory, crash the system, or escalate privileges to root.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running vulnerable kernels remain exposed to local attackers who can gain full control, disrupt operations, or access sensitive data; weaponized public exploits increase the urgency for organizations still running unpatched kernels more than four years after disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with a local account prepares a sequence of io_uring submissions that trigger the use-after-free condition, reclaims the freed memory with attacker-controlled data, and leverages the resulting corruption to overwrite kernel structures and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit a30f895ad3239f45012e860d4f94c1a388b36d14 or any later mainline release that contains the fix; rebuild and reboot all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit a30f895ad3239f45012e860d4f94c1a388b36d14; attempt to reproduce the original proof-of-concept in a controlled test environment to confirm the vulnerability is closed.
Typical attack path
- Obtain a local shell on the target system
- Compile or obtain a weaponized io_uring exploit binary
- Execute the exploit to trigger the use-after-free
- Achieve kernel memory corruption and privilege escalation
- Install persistence or move laterally
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for oops or panic messages referencing io_uring or use-after-free conditions around the time of suspected incidents; correlate with unexpected root processes or new setuid binaries created by local users.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-user systems
- Restrict local user accounts and io_uring usage via seccomp or kernel configuration where feasible
- Enable kernel address-space layout randomization and other exploit mitigations
- Monitor vulnerability disclosure feeds for related CVEs in the same subsystem
The record
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel’s io_uring implementation. This flaw allows an attacker with a local account to corrupt system memory, crash the system or escalate privileges.
