What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in thermal_cooling_device_stats_update when mlxreg-fan driver receives a sysfs-enforced fan state value exceeding the nominal maximum, violating the thermal statistics table bounds under CONFIG_THERMAL_STATISTICS.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory corruption risk on affected Mellanox switch and server hardware using the mlxreg-fan driver, potentially leading to crashes or instability during fan speed configuration; low prevalence and no known exploitation reduce immediate operational disruption.
How an attack unfolds
Local attacker writes a high fan minimum speed value (above nominal max) via the driver's sysfs interface; the driver fails to return a non-zero code, allowing thermal_zone_device_update to call stats update with an out-of-range state and trigger slab-out-of-bounds read.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that returns a non-zero value from the mlxreg-fan set_cur_state handler when the requested state exceeds the nominal maximum; rebuild or upgrade to a kernel containing commit resolving CVE-2021-47393.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patched mlxreg-fan driver returns a non-zero error for state values above nominal max; verify absence of the KASAN trace when CONFIG_THERMAL_STATISTICS=y and the sysfs write is performed.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hwmon: (mlxreg-fan) Return non-zero value when fan current state is enforced from sysfs Fan speed minimum can be enforced from sysfs. For example, setting current fan speed to 20 is used to enforce fan speed to be at 100% speed, 19 - to be not below 90% speed, etcetera. This feature provides ability to limit fan speed according to some system wise considerations, like absence of some replaceable units or high system ambient temperature. Request for changing fan minimum speed is configuration request and can be set only through 'sysfs' write procedure. In this situation value of argument 'state' is above nominal fan speed maximum. Return non-zero code in this case to avoid thermal_cooling_device_stats_update() call, because in this case statistics update violates thermal statistics table range.
