What it actually does
Unregistering a nexthop notification chain listener without replaying delete notifications for remaining nexthops leaves kernel-allocated nexthop objects unreferenced, causing memory leaks that accumulate until exhaustion.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using affected network drivers (such as mlxsw) can experience gradual memory depletion during interface reloads or driver unloads, leading to degraded performance, unexpected reboots, or service outages in production networking environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local privileges repeatedly creates blackhole nexthops and triggers devlink reload operations on supported hardware; each reload unregisters the listener without flushing leaked objects, steadily consuming kernel memory until the system becomes unresponsive.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a Linux kernel containing the upstream fix that replays delete notifications during unregister_nexthop_notifier() and ensures RTNL locking symmetry for all callers; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel image.
How to confirm the fix worked
After patching, confirm absence of the leak by repeating the syzkaller reproducer steps under kmemleak monitoring and verifying no unreferenced nexthop slabs remain after devlink reload operations.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on a Linux system with vulnerable kernel and mlxsw or similar netdev drivers.
- Execute ip nexthop add commands referencing blackhole routes backed by loopback devices.
- Trigger devlink dev reload on the affected PCI device to force listener unregistration.
- Repeat the sequence to amplify unreleased nexthop allocations.
- Monitor memory usage until kernel OOM conditions manifest.
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for repeated kmem_cache_alloc traces originating from mlxsw_sp_nexthop_obj_group_create or call_nexthop_notifiers during devlink reload events; correlate with rising slab usage for nexthop-related objects via /proc/slabinfo or kmemleak reports.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing mlxsw, netdevsim, or VXLAN drivers to external or multi-tenant workloads.
- Enable kmemleak or similar kernel memory debugging in staging environments to detect similar notification-chain leaks early.
- Restrict unprivileged access to ip nexthop and devlink commands via SELinux or capabilities until patches are deployed.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nexthop: Fix memory leaks in nexthop notification chain listeners syzkaller discovered memory leaks [1] that can be reduced to the following commands: # ip nexthop add id 1 blackhole # devlink dev reload pci/0000:06:00.0 As part of the reload flow, mlxsw will unregister its netdevs and then unregister from the nexthop notification chain. Before unregistering from the notification chain, mlxsw will receive delete notifications for nexthop objects using netdevs registered by mlxsw or their uppers. mlxsw will not receive notifications for nexthops using netdevs that are not dismantled as part of the reload flow. For example, the blackhole nexthop above that internally uses the loopback netdev as its nexthop device. One way to fix this problem is to have listeners flush their nexthop tables after unregistering from the notification chain. This is error-prone as evident by this patch and also not symmetric with the registration path where a listener receives a dump of all the existing nexthops. Therefore, fix this problem by replaying delete notifications for the listener being unregistered. This is symmetric to the registration path and also consistent with the netdev notification chain. The above means that unregister_nexthop_notifier(), like register_nexthop_notifier(), will have to take RTNL in order to iterate over the existing nexthops and that any callers of the function cannot hold RTNL. This is true for mlxsw and netdevsim, but not for the VXLAN driver. To avoid a deadlock, change the latter to unregister its nexthop listener without holding RTNL, making it symmetric to the registration path.
