What it actually does
Stack out-of-bounds read in ip_do_fragment triggered when sch_fragment casts a temporary dst_entry pointer to rtable for IPv4 packets that were reassembled via act_ct and then fragmented via act_mirred, exposing adjacent stack memory.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using Linux traffic-control features for connection tracking and mirroring can experience kernel crashes or limited memory disclosure, causing network service outages and potential exposure of sensitive kernel data.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker sends IPv4 packets that pass through cls_flower, act_ct reassembly, and act_mirred fragmentation; the kernel then calls ip_do_fragment with a mis-typed dst_entry, performing an out-of-bounds stack read that can be observed via KASAN or used for information leakage.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that allocates a properly sized temporary structure for IPv4 in sch_fragment (matching the IPv6 path); update to a kernel containing the resolution for CVE-2021-46954.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the temporary dst_entry allocation size change in sch_fragment.c; rebuild with KASAN and re-test the act_ct + act_mirred fragmentation path to verify absence of the reported stack OOB access.
Typical attack path
- Configure or abuse a tc filter with cls_flower, act_ct, and act_mirred on an ingress path
- Send crafted IPv4 packets that trigger reassembly followed by fragmentation
- ip_do_fragment dereferences the temporary dst_entry as an rtable structure
- OOB read occurs at rt_mtu_locked offset on the stack
How to detect it
Monitor kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing ip_do_fragment and sch_fragment; inspect audit logs for unexpected use of raw sockets or tc actions on systems that process untrusted IPv4 traffic.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on hosts that use act_ct or act_mirred in production tc rules
- Audit tc configurations to identify unnecessary use of connection-tracking and mirroring actions
- Enable kernel hardening options such as stack canaries and KASAN in test environments

Then, in the following call graph: ip_do_fragment() ip_skb_dst_mtu() ip_dst_mtu_maybe_forward() ip_mtu_locked() the pointer to struct dst_entry is used as pointer to struct rtable: this turns the access to struct members like rt_mtu_locked into an OOB read in the stack. Fix this changing the temporary variable used for IPv4 packets in sch_fragment(), similarly to what is done for IPv6 few lines below.
