What it actually does
Improper fault handling during copy_from_user in the shiftfs stacking filesystem leads to double-free conditions or unfreed memory allocations, enabling kernel memory exhaustion or arbitrary code execution within kernel context.
Why it matters to the business
Local attackers can crash systems via memory exhaustion or escalate privileges to gain full control, resulting in service outages, data compromise, and potential lateral movement within Linux environments; widespread use of Ubuntu kernels increases exposure across servers and desktops.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access on an affected Ubuntu system interacts with the shiftfs filesystem to trigger a fault during copy_from_user operations, exploiting the resulting memory corruption to either exhaust kernel memory for denial of service or execute arbitrary code for privilege escalation, consistent with generic Linux kernel privilege escalation techniques.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a patched Ubuntu kernel version that resolves the shiftfs fault-handling defect; apply all available kernel security updates from Canonical and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version is updated beyond the vulnerable shiftfs implementation, review changelog entries for shiftfs fixes, and test that copy_from_user fault paths no longer produce double-free or leak conditions in controlled environments.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on target Ubuntu system
- Interact with or mount a shiftfs filesystem instance
- Craft input to induce fault during copy_from_user handling
- Trigger double-free or memory leak to corrupt kernel state
- Escalate to arbitrary code execution or cause kernel memory exhaustion
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg output for shiftfs entries showing memory allocation errors or faults; examine audit logs for unusual shiftfs mount or access patterns that coincide with high memory usage or process crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel package updates on all Ubuntu systems
- Restrict local user access where shiftfs may be used
- Monitor kernel logs for shiftfs-related memory errors
- Validate patch deployment through version checks and restart procedures
The record
Shiftfs, an out-of-tree stacking file system included in Ubuntu Linux kernels, did not properly handle faults occurring during copy_from_user() correctly. These could lead to either a double-free situation or memory not being freed at all. An attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (kernel memory exhaustion) or gain privileges via executing arbitrary code. AKA ZDI-CAN-13562.
