What it actually does

Unsanitized contentId parameter passed to the /control/stream endpoint permits injection and execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the context of other users' sessions.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can hijack user sessions, steal sensitive data, or perform unauthorized actions on behalf of victims, increasing risk of account compromise and data exposure across widely deployed instances.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a URL containing a malicious script inside the contentId parameter, shares the link via phishing or other channels, and the victim’s browser executes the script when the link is visited, leveraging the high EPSS score and weaponized exploit maturity for reliable attacks even years after disclosure.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a version containing the fix commit 264022ee4af4abca1c158944dc299a8faf8696d6 or later; alternatively implement input sanitization and output encoding for the contentId parameter before processing in the stream handler.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the endpoint rejects or encodes script-related characters in contentId; review change logs or source for the referenced commit; test with known XSS payloads to verify blocking.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a reachable /control/stream endpoint
  2. Embed a payload containing script tags or event handlers in the contentId value
  3. Deliver the crafted URL to a target user
  4. Victim interaction triggers script execution in the browser
  5. Attacker receives session tokens or performs actions via the compromised session

How to detect it

Review web server and application logs for requests to /control/stream containing contentId values with HTML tags, event handlers, or javascript: URIs; correlate with user session anomalies or unexpected redirects.

  • /control/stream?contentId=
  • contentId=%3Cscript
  • contentId=javascript:
  • contentId=onerror=
  • contentId=onload=

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade due to weaponized exploit and sustained high EPSS of 0.9731
  • Scan all instances for the vulnerable versions 16.11.01 through 16.11.07
  • Implement web application firewall rules to block common XSS patterns on the stream endpoint
  • Monitor for unusual requests to /control/stream and educate users on link hygiene

The record

Data sent with contentId to /control/stream is not sanitized, allowing XSS attacks in Apache OFBiz 16.11.01 to 16.11.07.
