Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A problem in how a popular web browser handles graphics on web pages could let attackers take over a user's computer simply by getting them to visit a harmful website.

What it actually does

Precision error in Skia graphics library triggers an out-of-bounds memory write when processing crafted HTML, enabling memory corruption that can lead to arbitrary code execution in the renderer process.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain control of affected systems through malicious web pages, risking data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement across user devices and enterprise networks; the vulnerability remains exploitable years after disclosure with public exploit code available.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious HTML page that triggers the precision error in Skia during rendering; when a victim visits the page in an unpatched Chrome browser, the out-of-bounds write corrupts memory and allows code execution within the renderer sandbox, which can then be chained for full system compromise.

How to fix it

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 67.0.3396.62 or later on all platforms; apply equivalent updates from Linux distributions that package Chrome or Chromium; disable JavaScript or use site isolation features as temporary mitigations where patching is delayed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed Chrome version is 67.0.3396.62 or higher via chrome://version; scan enterprise endpoints for outdated Chrome binaries; confirm Skia-related rendering paths are covered by the update through automated vulnerability scanners.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts crafted HTML page on malicious or compromised site
  2. Victim is lured to visit the page via phishing or watering-hole tactics
  3. Browser renders the page and triggers Skia precision error
  4. Out-of-bounds write corrupts memory leading to code execution
  5. Attacker escalates privileges or exfiltrates data from compromised system

How to detect it

Review browser process crash logs and renderer sandbox violations for signs of memory corruption; examine web proxy or endpoint logs for access to known malicious domains hosting exploit pages; search endpoint telemetry for unexpected renderer process behavior or post-exploitation artifacts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy Chrome updates to all managed endpoints given the public exploit availability
  • Prioritize browser patching in high-risk user populations such as executives and developers
  • Enable Chrome enterprise policies for automatic updates and site isolation
  • Monitor for any renewed exploit activity despite the age of the vulnerability

The record

A precision error in Skia in Google Chrome prior to 67.0.3396.62 allowed a remote attacker to perform an out of bounds memory write via a crafted HTML page.
