What it actually does
Memory safety bugs causing memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain full control of affected systems, leading to data theft, service disruption, or further network compromise; urgency is low given stable low EPSS and lack of known exploitation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies specially crafted input that triggers one of the memory safety issues, resulting in memory corruption that allows execution of attacker-controlled code.
How to fix it
Upgrade sonatype/nexus-public to the fixed commit 99dc5603f6d3b9ecdd6288d2a50860c9cb2fabcf.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version is at or newer than the fixed commit and that no older vulnerable builds remain in the environment.
Typical attack path
- Identify a reachable network service or input vector in the affected product
- Craft and send malicious input designed to trigger memory corruption
- Achieve arbitrary code execution and establish persistence or lateral movement
How to detect it
Review application logs and process execution history for unexpected crashes or abnormal memory behavior around the time of potential exploitation attempts.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed commit immediately to eliminate the memory corruption risk
- Review and harden input handling paths that could reach the affected code
- Monitor vulnerability feeds for any future changes in exploit maturity
The record
Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 60, Firefox ESR 60, and Firefox ESR 52.8. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60, Thunderbird < 52.9, Firefox ESR < 60.1, Firefox ESR < 52.9, and Firefox < 61.
