What it actually does
A use-after-free occurs during HTML5 stream parsing when custom HTML elements are involved, allowing the stream parser object to be freed while references to it remain active, which can be leveraged for memory corruption and arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain full control of affected user systems via malicious web content, resulting in data theft, credential compromise, or malware deployment across browser-dependent environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a crafted webpage containing custom HTML elements that interact with the HTML5 stream parser; when the victim loads the page, the parser object is freed prematurely while still referenced, enabling memory manipulation to achieve code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 65 or later, Firefox ESR to 60.5 or later, and Thunderbird to 60.5 or later. Apply vendor security updates to all affected distributions of Ubuntu, Debian, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed browser and mail client versions against the fixed releases (Firefox 65+, ESR 60.5+, Thunderbird 60.5+); re-test parsing of custom HTML elements in isolated environments to confirm absence of the crash condition.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares malicious HTML5 content with custom elements targeting the stream parser
- Victim is lured to the attacker-controlled page via phishing or compromised site
- Browser parses the stream and triggers the use-after-free condition
- Attacker uses memory corruption primitives to execute arbitrary code
How to detect it
Examine browser crash logs and memory dumps for parser-related faults involving HTML5 streams; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to suspicious domains shortly before any anomalous process behavior.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all browser and Thunderbird instances to the versions listed in remediation guidance
- Enforce automatic updates and application allow-listing to prevent execution of outdated binaries
- Review web proxy or endpoint logs for access to untrusted sites that could deliver HTML5 stream content
The record
A use-after-free vulnerability can occur while parsing an HTML5 stream in concert with custom HTML elements. This results in the stream parser object being freed while still in use, leading to a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.5, Firefox ESR < 60.5, and Firefox < 65.
