A bug in how virtual machines handle certain low-level operations can make Linux systems running inside Xen crash or let someone already inside the machine gain more control.

What it actually does
The xen_failsafe_callback entry point in the Linux kernel's 64-bit x86 entry code fails to preserve the RBX register, resulting in use of uninitialized memory that can crash the system or be leveraged for privilege escalation within a Xen PV guest.
Why it matters to the business
Virtualized Linux guests on Xen may experience sudden crashes or, in rare cases, allow an attacker already inside the guest to obtain elevated access, disrupting workloads and increasing risk in multi-tenant environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access inside a 64-bit x86 PV Linux guest crafts input that invokes the failsafe callback path; because RBX is not saved and restored, the kernel dereferences uninitialized values, leading to a crash or controlled memory corruption that can be chained for privilege gain.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for this register-save issue and reboot affected guests; apply the corresponding Xen and distribution updates that backport the correction.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel version matches or exceeds the patched release from the distribution or Xen project; test that deliberate invocation of the failsafe path no longer produces uninitialized memory faults or guest crashes.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell inside a vulnerable 64-bit x86 PV Xen guest
- Trigger the xen_failsafe_callback entry point with crafted register state
- Observe kernel crash or attempt to exploit resulting uninitialized memory for privilege escalation
How to detect it
Search system logs and kernel crash dumps for references to xen_failsafe_callback or uninitialized memory faults originating from arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S; correlate with guest-initiated hypercalls that exercise the failsafe path.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Xen PV guests on 64-bit x86 within the next maintenance window
- Review guest kernel configurations to ensure only necessary PV features are enabled
- Monitor for guest kernel oops or panic events that reference entry_64.S or failsafe paths
The record
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.17.11, as used in Xen through 4.11.x. The xen_failsafe_callback entry point in arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S does not properly maintain RBX, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (uninitialized memory usage and system crash). Within Xen, 64-bit x86 PV Linux guest OS users can trigger a guest OS crash or possibly gain privileges.
