What it actually does

Out-of-bounds write in jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata() triggered by operations on a crafted ext4 filesystem image, resulting in kernel memory corruption and crash.

How an attack unfolds

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 8bc1379b82b8e809eef77a9fedbb75c6c297be19 or later; alternatively, disable mounting of untrusted ext4 images via kernel configuration or mount options until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains the referenced commit or later; attempt to mount a test image that previously triggered the flaw and confirm the system no longer crashes.

Typical attack path

1. Craft a malicious ext4 filesystem image containing structures that exercise the vulnerable jbd2 code path
2. Place the image on a system accessible to a local user
3. Mount the image using standard mount utilities
4. Perform filesystem operations that invoke jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata()
5. Trigger kernel oops and system crash

Review kernel logs for oops/panic entries referencing ext4 or jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata around the time of unexpected reboots or mount operations on external media.
