CVE-2018-1094

What it actually does

Failure to initialize the crc32c checksum driver in ext4_fill_super leaves a NULL function pointer that is later dereferenced during xattr inode hash computation, resulting in a kernel panic on a crafted ext4 filesystem image.

Systems processing untrusted ext4 images can be crashed, causing unplanned downtime and loss of availability; the affected archiver component must be updated to the commit that resolves the initialization gap.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious ext4 image that triggers the uninitialized crc32c path, mounts or processes the image locally, and forces a NULL pointer dereference that crashes the system; public exploits exist for this vector.

Upgrade mholt/archiver to commit e4ef56d48eb029648b0e895bb0b6a393ef0829c3; rebuild and redeploy any binaries or containers that embed the library; verify the updated version no longer ships the vulnerable ext4 superblock handling path.

Confirm the running archiver binary or library reports the fixed commit hash; attempt to mount or extract a test ext4 image known to trigger the original crash and verify the process no longer panics.
