What it actually does
Triggers a resource leak (ATA queue command) in the SAS SCSI host driver under specific failure conditions, resulting in denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
May cause system instability or resource exhaustion on Linux systems using SAS hardware, though the issue requires physical proximity and its practical relevance is disputed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with physical access to the system unplugs SAS Host Bus Adapter cables to induce failure conditions that leak resources and crash or destabilize the kernel.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 318aaf34f1179b39fa9c30fa0f3288b645beee39 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the fix commit in the kernel source tree or verify deployment of a patched kernel package.
Typical attack path
- Obtain physical access to the target system
- Unplug SAS HBA cables to trigger specific failure conditions
- Cause resource leak leading to denial of service
How to detect it
Examine system logs for SAS SCSI host errors or resource leak indicators coinciding with physical access events; no remote exploitation artifacts exist.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit if running affected versions
- Restrict physical access to systems with SAS HBAs
- Review hardware configurations to determine exposure
The record
drivers/scsi/libsas/sas_scsi_host.c in the Linux kernel before 4.16 allows local users to cause a denial of service (ata qc leak) by triggering certain failure conditions. NOTE: a third party disputes the relevance of this report because the failure can only occur for physically proximate attackers who unplug SAS Host Bus Adapter cables
