What it actually does
The vulnerability is a memory corruption issue in the Chakra scripting engine that occurs during object handling, allowing an attacker to corrupt memory and achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the affected browser or application process.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can result in full compromise of user workstations running affected Microsoft Edge or ChakraCore versions, enabling data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement with potential widespread operational disruption across an organization.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious webpage containing specially crafted JavaScript that triggers the memory corruption flaw in the scripting engine when rendered by Microsoft Edge; upon user visitation the exploit corrupts memory to execute attacker-supplied code, with public exploits available since disclosure.
How to fix it
Apply the security updates released by Microsoft for Microsoft Edge and ChakraCore in February 2018; ensure all affected Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 systems receive the latest cumulative updates that address scripting engine memory handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify Edge and ChakraCore versions against the February 2018 or later security updates; confirm absence of the vulnerable object-handling code paths through patch verification or re-testing with known proof-of-concept triggers.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious webpage with crafted JavaScript targeting the scripting engine.
- Victim is lured to visit the page via phishing, drive-by download, or compromised site.
- Browser processes the page and the scripting engine mishandles objects in memory.
- Memory corruption is leveraged to achieve remote code execution within the browser process.
- Attacker payload executes to install malware, steal credentials, or perform further actions.
How to detect it
Review web proxy and browser process logs for unexpected crashes or memory errors during Edge sessions; examine endpoint telemetry for post-visit process anomalies or new executables launched from the browser context following visits to untrusted sites.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of February 2018 Microsoft security updates to all Edge and Windows 10/Server 2016 endpoints.
- Monitor EPSS score (stable at 0.65) and public exploit availability for continued urgency.
- Implement browser sandboxing, script-blocking extensions, and least-privilege user accounts as compensating controls.
- Conduct inventory of any remaining ChakraCore-dependent applications and migrate or isolate them.
The record
Microsoft Edge and ChakraCore in Microsoft Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, 1703, 1709, and Windows Server 2016 allows remote code execution, due to how the scripting engine handles objects in memory, aka "Scripting Engine Memory Corruption Vulnerability".
