What it actually does

Memory corruption in the Chakra scripting engine allows an attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution by manipulating objects in memory during script execution.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of affected Windows systems via a malicious web page, enabling data theft, persistence, or deployment of additional malware on unpatched endpoints.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious web page containing specially formed JavaScript that triggers a use-after-free or similar memory corruption condition in the Chakra engine when the page is rendered in Edge; successful corruption leads to control-flow hijacking and remote code execution within the browser process.

How to fix it

Apply the latest cumulative security updates for Microsoft Edge and Windows 10/Server 2016; replace any standalone ChakraCore builds with patched versions; disable Edge where feasible until updates are deployed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm Edge and Windows builds are newer than the February 2018 security update; verify ChakraCore commits after the fix date; test that the vulnerable object-handling code paths no longer crash or allow code execution under fuzzing.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker hosts a malicious website containing a crafted JavaScript payload
  2. Victim is lured to visit the site via phishing or compromised legitimate site
  3. Edge/Chakra processes the script and triggers the memory corruption
  4. Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution inside the browser sandbox or escapes it
  5. Payload downloads and executes additional malware or establishes C2

How to detect it

Review Windows Event Logs and browser crash dumps for unexpected Chakra.dll terminations around the time of web browsing; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to previously unknown domains; inspect process creation events following Edge activity for anomalous child processes.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all Windows 10 and Server 2016 systems running Edge
  • Prioritize patching of internet-facing or high-risk workstations
  • Block legacy Edge usage via group policy where modern browsers are available
  • Monitor for any remaining ChakraCore dependencies in internal applications

The record
