What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow caused by improper handling of escaped strings, allowing an attacker to copy data past the end of a buffer and trigger a crash or arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Applications using the vulnerable library may crash or be compromised remotely, leading to service outages, data exposure, or full system takeover; the issue affects downstream packages such as ruby (Bitnami) and remains relevant wherever older versions are still deployed.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted string containing escaped characters to any interface that parses configuration data with the vulnerable library; the malformed input triggers an out-of-bounds write during string handling, resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade all affected packages to the fixed versions; for ruby (Bitnami) this means moving to version 2.6.7 or later. Rebuild or redeploy any containers or images that embed the vulnerable library and verify the new version is active.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed library version meets or exceeds the fixed release, run regression tests with known malicious escaped-string inputs, and monitor for the absence of crashes or memory errors under load.
Typical attack path
- Identify an application or service that processes untrusted input through the vulnerable library
- Craft a malicious string containing excessive escaped characters
- Deliver the string via network request, file upload, or configuration channel
- Trigger the parser to perform the unsafe string copy
- Exploit the resulting memory corruption to execute arbitrary code or crash the process
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for segmentation faults or heap-related errors occurring during configuration parsing; correlate with inbound requests containing unusual escape sequences or large strings around the time of the crash.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all systems using the vulnerable library and prioritize upgrade to the fixed release
- Apply the update within standard change windows given the remote code execution potential and slight EPSS increase
- Add the fixed version constraint to dependency manifests and CI pipelines to prevent reintroduction
The record
Augeas versions up to and including 1.8.0 are vulnerable to heap-based buffer overflow due to improper handling of escaped strings. Attacker could send crafted strings that would cause the application using augeas to copy past the end of a buffer, leading to a crash or possible code execution.
