What it actually does

The flaw permits an unauthenticated remote attacker to trigger an invalid memory read inside the MIDI event parser, causing the application process to crash and produce a denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that process untrusted MIDI files can be forced offline, interrupting any service that relies on the affected library and requiring manual restarts or failover actions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious MIDI file that reaches the vulnerable _WM_SetupMidiEvent routine; when the file is opened or parsed, the invalid memory access occurs and the process terminates. Public exploit code has been available since shortly after disclosure.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the versions listed as fixed (minio and minio-bitnami-2024-compat on both Chainguard and Wolfi). If the library is vendored, rebuild with a patched WildMIDI release that eliminates the invalid read.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running binary or package reports a version string beyond the vulnerable 0.4.2 release; re-test with known crashing MIDI samples in an isolated environment to verify absence of the crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a network-accessible service or application that accepts or processes MIDI files using the vulnerable library
  2. Generate or obtain a specially crafted .mid file that triggers the memory-safety flaw
  3. Deliver the file to the target via upload, download, or message attachment
  4. Observe service crash and confirm denial-of-service condition

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes or segmentation faults that occur immediately after MIDI file ingestion; correlate with file-upload or attachment-processing timestamps.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching or replacing any deployments that still ship WildMIDI 0.4.2 or earlier
  • Add MIDI file upload or processing paths to the list of untrusted-input surfaces that require sandboxing or resource limits
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit-availability feeds for similar memory-safety issues in media libraries

The record

The _WM_SetupMidiEvent function in internal_midi.c:2318 in WildMIDI 0.4.2 can cause a denial of service (invalid memory read and application crash) via a crafted mid file.
