Older versions of Firefox and Thunderbird contain flaws that could let an attacker take over a user's computer simply by getting them to visit a malicious website or open a malicious email.

What it actually does
Multiple memory safety issues in the browser and mail client lead to memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can result in full system compromise, theft of sensitive data, installation of persistent malware, and disruption of operations across any environment running the affected versions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts malicious web content or email that triggers one of the memory corruption bugs when rendered or processed by the vulnerable client; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into remote code execution, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary commands on the target system.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 52 or later, Firefox ESR to 45.8 or later, Thunderbird to 52 or later, and Thunderbird ESR to 45.8 or later. Apply all subsequent security updates promptly.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify that installed versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; re-scan systems after patching to confirm no vulnerable binaries remain.
Typical attack path
- Deliver malicious web page or email attachment to the victim
- Victim opens the content in a vulnerable Firefox or Thunderbird instance
- Memory corruption is triggered during rendering or parsing
- Attacker gains arbitrary code execution and establishes control
How to detect it
Review browser and mail client crash reports, unexpected child process spawns, and network connections initiated shortly after content rendering; correlate with endpoint telemetry for signs of post-exploitation activity.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all instances of Firefox and Thunderbird and apply the required updates
- Block or restrict use of unsupported versions until patches are deployed
- Monitor for signs of exploitation in endpoint and network logs
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Thunderbird 45.7. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 52, Firefox ESR < 45.8, Thunderbird < 52, and Thunderbird < 45.8.
