What it actually does
The flaw triggers use-after-free of uninitialized memory in vorbis_analysis_headerout() inside info.c when vi->channels <= 0, enabling remote code execution via memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can achieve full system compromise on any application or downstream package that processes untrusted Vorbis streams, potentially leading to data theft or service takeover; 98 downstream dependents increase indirect exposure across the ecosystem.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted Ogg Vorbis stream that reaches vorbis_analysis_headerout with channels set to zero or less, causing the library to free uninitialized memory that is then reused to execute arbitrary code.
How to fix it
Upgrade libvorbis beyond 1.3.5 and apply the exact fixed package versions provided: tensorflow (Bitnami) 2.1.4 or later. Rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications after the update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect installed package versions of libvorbis and tensorflow (Bitnami) against the fixed releases; confirm the vulnerable code path in info.c is no longer reachable by testing with crafted inputs that set channels <= 0.
Typical attack path
- Deliver malicious Vorbis data over the network or via file upload
- Trigger audio header parsing that calls vorbis_analysis_headerout with invalid channel count
- Leverage the resulting uninitialized-memory free for memory corruption and code execution
How to detect it
Review application logs and crash reports for segmentation faults or heap errors during Vorbis header processing; correlate with inbound Ogg streams from untrusted sources.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of tensorflow (Bitnami) to 2.1.4 or newer across all environments
- Scan the full dependency tree for any other packages pulling in libvorbis <= 1.3.5
- Implement network and file-ingress filtering for untrusted Ogg Vorbis content until patches are applied
The record
Xiph.Org libvorbis 1.3.5 allows Remote Code Execution upon freeing uninitialized memory in the function vorbis_analysis_headerout() in info.c when vi->channels<=0, a similar issue to Mozilla bug 550184.
