What it actually does
Out-of-bounds memory access in the bark_noise_hybridmp function of libvorbis 1.3.5 triggered during processing of specially crafted mp4 containers, resulting in application crashes or potential further memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Disruption to media-handling workflows and applications that embed or depend on libvorbis across 98 downstream packages, leading to availability loss and the need for emergency patching of affected tensorflow deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious mp4 file that reaches the vulnerable bark_noise_hybridmp path when decoded; the victim application opens or processes the file, triggering the out-of-bounds access.
How to fix it
Upgrade tensorflow (Bitnami) to version 2.1.4 or later; rebuild any custom builds against a patched libvorbis release that corrects the psy.c logic.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed tensorflow version is 2.1.4+, run regression tests with known-triggering mp4 samples, and monitor for absence of crashes in the bark_noise_hybridmp symbol.
Typical attack path
- Attacker generates mp4 file containing malformed vorbis data
- File is delivered via download, attachment, or media stream
- Target application or tensorflow pipeline decodes the file
- bark_noise_hybridmp performs out-of-bounds read/write
- Process crashes or memory state is corrupted
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for segmentation faults or crashes originating from libvorbis psy.c functions; inspect recent mp4 files processed before any observed instability.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all tensorflow (Bitnami) instances to 2.1.4
- Inventory other direct or transitive dependents of libvorbis 1.3.5
- Add crafted-media test cases to CI pipelines
- Review media-processing code paths for similar unbounded reads
The record
The bark_noise_hybridmp function in psy.c in Xiph.Org libvorbis 1.3.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds access and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted mp4 file.
