What it actually does
The flaw causes memory corruption in the WebKit component, enabling remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or trigger a denial of service via a crafted web site.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can lead to full device compromise or application crashes on affected Apple platforms, resulting in potential data loss, unauthorized access, or service disruption; low exploitation likelihood given age and stable low EPSS with no ransomware usage.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a specially crafted website that, when visited by a victim using an affected WebKit-based browser or app, triggers the memory corruption to achieve code execution or crash the process; no named threat actors or campaigns are associated.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Apple products to iOS 11.2+, Safari 11.0.2+, iCloud 7.2+, iTunes 12.7.2+, or tvOS 11.2+; for listed ImageMagick packages update to the provided fixed versions where applicable (imagemagick and variants: fixed in 0).
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify product versions against the fixed releases listed and test that crafted web content no longer triggers crashes or unexpected behavior in WebKit.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious website containing the exploit payload
- Victim is lured to visit the site via phishing or other means
- WebKit processes the crafted content triggering memory corruption
- Attacker gains arbitrary code execution or causes denial of service
How to detect it
Review web proxy logs, browser crash reports, and endpoint telemetry for visits to suspicious domains followed by unexpected process behavior or memory-related errors in WebKit components.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all affected Apple platforms immediately due to remote code execution potential despite low EPSS
- Monitor for any new exploit maturity indicators given 3209 days since publication
- Apply least-privilege browsing policies and web filtering as interim controls
The record
An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 11.2 is affected. Safari before 11.0.2 is affected. iCloud before 7.2 on Windows is affected. iTunes before 12.7.2 on Windows is affected. tvOS before 11.2 is affected. The issue involves the "WebKit" component. It allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted web site.
