What it actually does
Memory corruption in the upstream Linux file system code used by the Android kernel allows a local attacker to corrupt kernel memory structures and escalate privileges.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation on legacy Android devices could let an attacker with local access obtain elevated control, read or modify user data, and persist on the device. The issue is more than seven years old with no known exploitation in the wild and stable low exploit probability, so current operational risk is limited to unpatched or end-of-life devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to supply input to the file system (for example via a malicious app or crafted file) triggers the memory corruption condition, uses it to execute arbitrary code within the kernel, and elevates from an unprivileged user context to root or system privileges.
How to fix it
Update the Android kernel to a build that incorporates the upstream fix for the file-system memory corruption (Android security patch level after August 2017). Apply the latest vendor or Google-provided kernel and system images; retire or isolate any devices that cannot receive updates.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel version and Android security patch level are newer than the vulnerable builds listed under Android ID A-36817013. Re-scan devices with updated vulnerability assessment tools that include this CVE.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or install an application on the target Android device
- Supply a malicious file or file-system operation that reaches the vulnerable upstream Linux code path
- Trigger the memory corruption to gain kernel code execution
- Escalate privileges and perform post-exploitation actions
How to detect it
Review kernel and system logs for anomalous file-system errors, unexpected privilege changes, or crashes near the time of suspected compromise; correlate with application installation or file access events.
What your security team should do
- Inventory all Android devices still running kernels from 2017 or earlier and prioritize their replacement or isolation
- Enforce mandatory OS and security patch updates through MDM or enterprise policies
- Monitor threat intelligence feeds for any future exploit code that references this kernel issue
The record
