What it actually does
Memory safety bugs leading to memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution in affected browser engines.
Why it matters to the business
Remote compromise of systems running vulnerable Chromium packages on Debian and Ubuntu allows attackers to execute code, exfiltrate data, or pivot within networks; widespread package usage across LTS distributions amplifies operational risk.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares specially crafted web content that exploits memory corruption when processed by the vulnerable browser; the victim loads the content and the flaw allows the attacker to run arbitrary code on the system.
How to fix it
Upgrade chromium to 71.0.3578.80-1 on Debian 11/12/13 and chromium-browser to 71.0.3578.80-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS; apply the exact fixed package versions provided for each distribution.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package version is at or above the listed fixed releases using the distribution package manager and verify no vulnerable instances remain in the environment.
Typical attack path
- Host malicious web content on an attacker-controlled server
- Lure or redirect a victim using a vulnerable Chromium package to load the content
- Trigger memory corruption during rendering to achieve arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Examine browser process logs and crash reports for unexpected memory handling failures; correlate with network logs showing visits to suspicious domains around the time of anomalous process behavior.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all listed Chromium packages to the specified fixed versions
- Scan inventories for any remaining affected Debian or Ubuntu Chromium installations
- Review browser-related process activity and logs for signs of unexpected code execution
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Thunderbird 45.5. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.1, Firefox ESR < 45.6, and Thunderbird < 45.6.
