A flaw in an old graphics library component could let a remote computer take control of affected systems if they connect to a malicious display server, so updating the packages removes the risk.

What it actually does
Integer overflow in X.org libXfixes on 32-bit platforms allows a remote X server to supply a length of INT_MAX, causing the client to stop reading data and lose synchronization with the server.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the affected packages could be compromised by a remote attacker, resulting in unauthorized access or control over processes handling X11 protocol data; the issue affects older package builds and has low current exploitation probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious X server and waits for a vulnerable client using the flawed libXfixes library to connect; the server then sends a specially crafted length value triggering the integer overflow, desynchronizing the protocol stream and potentially allowing privilege escalation or code execution on the client.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to the fixed versions: helm (Chainguard) to 3.12.2-r1 and helm (Wolfi) to 3.12.2-r1; rebuild any dependent images or containers to ensure the updated library is included.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify package versions match the fixed releases, confirm libXfixes is at or above 5.0.3 on 32-bit platforms, and test X client connections against a non-malicious server to ensure protocol synchronization is maintained.
Typical attack path
- Attacker configures a malicious X server to respond to incoming client connections
- Vulnerable client initiates an X session using the affected libXfixes library
- Server transmits a length field set to INT_MAX to trigger the integer overflow
- Client stops reading data and enters an out-of-sync state with the server
- Attacker leverages the desynchronized state to inject commands or escalate privileges
How to detect it
Review X client logs for unexpected protocol desynchronization events or abrupt connection terminations; examine process memory or network captures for INT_MAX length values in X11 requests; no widespread exploitation artifacts are known for this older issue.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed package upgrades immediately in build pipelines and runtime environments
- Scan container images and package repositories for any remaining vulnerable libXfixes versions
- Monitor for any new exploit maturity indicators given the 2016 disclosure date and current low EPSS
The record
Integer overflow in X.org libXfixes before 5.0.3 on 32-bit platforms might allow remote X servers to gain privileges via a length value of INT_MAX, which triggers the client to stop reading data and get out of sync.
