What it actually does

The parse_chunk_header function in libtorrent fails to properly validate input in HTTP responses or UPnP broadcasts, allowing a malformed message to trigger a crash.

Why it matters to the business

Services depending on the affected library can be taken offline by remote attackers, interrupting operations that rely on torrent or network discovery functionality.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious HTTP response or UPnP broadcast packet and sends it to a reachable instance of the vulnerable application; the malformed data reaches the unvalidated parsing routine and forces an unhandled crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected packages to the versions containing the libtorrent fix (neuvector-scanner and related components to 0_git20240417-r1 or later).

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed release; test by replaying a benign malformed input and verifying the process no longer terminates unexpectedly.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify exposed service using the vulnerable libtorrent version
  2. Craft malformed chunk header in HTTP response or UPnP broadcast
  3. Transmit packet to target endpoint
  4. Trigger crash and resulting denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for unexpected process terminations or segmentation faults in components that use libtorrent; correlate with incoming HTTP or UDP traffic containing unusual chunk sizes or malformed headers.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the specified package updates across all environments
  • Scan container images and rebuild pipelines to ensure the patched libtorrent is included
  • Monitor network traffic for unexpected crashes in services using torrent or UPnP components

The record

The parse_chunk_header function in libtorrent before 1.1.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted (1) HTTP response or possibly a (2) UPnP broadcast.
