What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow in wpa_supplicant when processing crafted SSID data in P2P management frames, enabling memory corruption that can lead to denial of service, arbitrary memory reads, or code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Wireless clients and access points using affected wpa_supplicant versions risk sudden crashes that disrupt network connectivity, potential exposure of sensitive memory contents, or full system compromise on devices handling peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connections.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker within wireless range crafts a management frame containing an oversized or malformed SSID and transmits it to trigger the vulnerable P2P entry creation or update path in wpa_supplicant, resulting in heap corruption that can be leveraged for crashes, information disclosure, or remote code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade wpa_supplicant to a version beyond 2.4 or apply the corresponding security update from the Linux distribution vendor; disable P2P functionality where feasible until patches are applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed wpa_supplicant version is newer than 2.4; review distribution security advisories for backported fixes; perform wireless traffic testing with known-safe frames to confirm absence of the overflow condition.
Typical attack path
- Position within Wi-Fi range of the target device running wpa_supplicant
- Craft a management frame with malicious SSID payload targeting P2P functionality
- Transmit the frame to force wpa_supplicant to create or update a P2P entry
- Trigger the heap overflow to corrupt memory structures
- Escalate to denial of service, memory disclosure, or arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Monitor system logs for wpa_supplicant crashes or segmentation faults during P2P operations; inspect wireless packet captures for unusual SSID lengths in management frames; review process core dumps or memory analysis artifacts for signs of heap corruption.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all systems running vulnerable wpa_supplicant versions due to the age of the issue and continued presence in legacy embedded devices
- Inventory wireless clients and infrastructure for affected packages across Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, and openSUSE deployments
- Consider network segmentation or AP configuration changes to limit exposure to unauthenticated management frames
The record
Heap-based buffer overflow in wpa_supplicant 1.0 through 2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash), read memory, or possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted SSID information in a management frame when creating or updating P2P entries.
