What it actually does
Improper input validation in wpa_supplicant and hostapd allows remote attackers to inject and execute arbitrary commands through crafted wireless frames when action scripts are configured for wpa_cli or hostapd_cli.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on these wireless management components face risk of unauthorized command execution, which could lead to full host compromise, data exposure, or service disruption; the issue affects a narrow set of configurations and has seen no widespread exploitation in over a decade.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker within radio range crafts a malicious management or data frame that is processed by the supplicant or access-point daemon; when the daemon invokes the CLI tool with an action script, the unsanitized frame content is passed to the shell, resulting in command execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to the versions that contain the input-validation fix; for the listed product this means moving to valkey (Bitnami) 5.0.14 or later. Where upgrades are not immediately possible, disable action-script execution or remove the CLI tools from the execution path.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version of wpa_supplicant, hostapd, or the packaging layer (valkey) meets or exceeds the fixed release; review configuration files for the presence of action-script directives and test that crafted frames no longer result in command execution.
Typical attack path
- Position within wireless range of the target device
- Send a specially crafted 802.11 frame that triggers CLI action-script execution
- Inject shell metacharacters or commands via frame fields that are not sanitized
- Achieve arbitrary command execution under the privileges of the wpa_supplicant or hostapd process
How to detect it
Review wireless daemon logs and CLI invocation history for unexpected command strings or frame contents containing shell metacharacters; correlate with process execution logs showing the wpa_cli or hostapd_cli binary spawning shells or running non-standard commands.
What your security team should do
- Apply the fixed package version (valkey 5.0.14) across all deployments within standard change windows
- Audit wireless daemon configurations and remove or disable action-script usage where feasible
- Monitor vendor advisories for any downstream packages that embed the affected components
The record
wpa_supplicant and hostapd 0.7.2 through 2.2, when running with certain configurations and using wpa_cli or hostapd_cli with action scripts, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via a crafted frame.
