What it actually does
Remote attackers can trigger unbounded memory allocation in libxml's xmlreader through recursive XML entity expansion, leading to denial of service via resource exhaustion.
Why it matters to the business
Applications that parse untrusted XML may become unresponsive or crash, causing service outages and requiring manual restarts or scaling interventions; the age of the issue and presence in long-lived deployments increase exposure for organizations still running vulnerable versions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts an XML document containing deeply nested or exponentially expanding entity references and submits it to any endpoint that uses the vulnerable xmlreader parser; libxml allocates memory for each expansion without limit until the process exhausts available RAM and fails.
How to fix it
Upgrade vault (Bitnami) to version 1.15.5 or later, which incorporates the corrected libxml behavior; if immediate upgrade is not possible, disable or sandbox XML parsing of untrusted data and apply network-level filtering for suspicious XML structures.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version is at least 1.15.5; re-test the affected endpoints with a controlled XEE payload while monitoring memory usage to verify the parser now rejects or limits expansion.
Typical attack path
- Identify an input vector that accepts XML (API, file upload, configuration import).
- Generate a minimal XEE payload that triggers repeated entity expansion.
- Send the payload to the target service.
- Observe memory consumption until the process terminates or becomes unresponsive.
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for sudden spikes in memory usage or out-of-memory events correlated with XML processing; examine web or API logs for unusually large or repetitive entity declarations in inbound XML payloads.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all vault (Bitnami) instances to 1.15.5 within the next change window.
- Inventory other services that embed libxml and schedule patching.
- Add XML input sanitization or size limits as a defense-in-depth control.
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any future increase in exploit activity.
The record
The xmlreader in libxml allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via crafted XML data, related to an XML Entity Expansion (XEE) attack.
