Cloudanix analysis
A widely used security tool fails to check whether the certificates it trusts are currently valid, letting attackers slip in fake credentials and quietly read or change data in transit.

What it actually does
The flaw prevents verification of activation and expiration dates on CA certificates, allowing use of invalid certificates in validation chains.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations using affected firejail versions face increased risk of undetected interception of network traffic, potentially exposing sensitive operations without triggering alerts or requiring immediate patches given the CVE's age and low exploitation signals.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker positions themselves on the network path, presents a server certificate signed by a CA that is either not yet valid or expired, and the lack of date checks allows the connection to proceed as trusted, enabling traffic inspection or modification.
How to fix it
Upgrade firejail to the fixed versions: 0.9.44.6-1 for Debian 11/12/13/14 packages or commit 38d418505e9ee2d326557e5639e8da49c298858f for the GIT repository; ensure underlying GnuTLS is also current where firejail links against it.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm firejail package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases via package manager queries; test certificate validation behavior with deliberately expired or not-yet-valid CA certificates in controlled TLS connections.
Typical attack path
- Position as network intermediary via ARP spoofing, DNS redirection, or compromised router
- Obtain or generate a certificate signed by a CA whose validity period does not include the current date
- Present the certificate during TLS handshake with the client application using the vulnerable library
- Complete the handshake successfully due to missing date validation
- Decrypt, inspect, or alter traffic between client and legitimate server
How to detect it
Examine application and system logs for unexpected TLS connections or certificate validation events around firejail processes; look for signs of network anomalies such as traffic routed through unexpected intermediaries, though specific exploitation artifacts are limited given the passive nature of the flaw.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrading all firejail installations to the specified fixed versions across Debian-based systems
- Review network exposure of firejail-protected workloads and enforce certificate pinning where feasible
- Monitor for any downstream dependents of firejail that may inherit the same library dependency
The record
GnuTLS before 2.9.10 does not verify the activation and expiration dates of CA certificates, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof servers via a certificate issued by a CA certificate that is (1) not yet valid or (2) no longer valid.
