What it actually does
rsync 3.1.1 permits remote attackers to write arbitrary files outside the intended synchronization directory by exploiting symlinks present in the transfer path, enabling path traversal that bypasses directory restrictions.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could corrupt or overwrite critical files on systems performing synchronization, leading to data integrity issues, service disruption, or unauthorized persistence in environments relying on rsync for backups or deployments; the vulnerability has been public for over a decade with available exploits but shows stable low exploitation probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a source directory containing malicious symlinks pointing outside the target, then initiates an rsync transfer against a vulnerable client or server; during synchronization the symlink is followed, resulting in writes to arbitrary filesystem locations.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected packages to the fixed versions: vt-cli (Chainguard) to 1.0.0-r7 or later and vt-cli (Wolfi) to 1.0.0-r7 or later; restrict rsync usage to trusted sources and consider disabling symlink following where possible until patches are applied.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm rsync version is no longer 3.1.1 and that vt-cli packages report the fixed releases; test synchronization with known symlink payloads in a controlled environment to verify writes remain confined.
Typical attack path
- Locate systems using rsync 3.1.1 or affected vt-cli packages for synchronization tasks
- Craft a source tree containing symlinks targeting sensitive paths such as configuration or binary directories
- Initiate rsync transfer from the malicious source to the target
- Verify writes succeeded outside the intended destination directory
How to detect it
Review rsync logs and process activity for transfers involving unexpected symlink creations or writes outside designated directories; correlate with file modification timestamps on sensitive paths during synchronization windows.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching vt-cli packages to the specified fixed versions across all environments
- Inventory rsync usage in build, backup, and deployment pipelines
- Monitor for any remaining vulnerable instances given the long public disclosure window
The record
rsync 3.1.1 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a file in the synchronization path.
