What it actually does

The flaw allows an rsync server to send crafted checksum values during a client-to-server file transfer, enabling byte-by-byte reconstruction of arbitrary files on the client machine from the client's responses.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could steal sensitive data from client systems during routine file synchronization operations, increasing risk of data exposure in environments relying on rsync for backups or deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious rsync server and tricks a client into initiating a transfer; the server then sends specially constructed checksums targeting files on the client, using responses to reassemble file contents.

How to fix it

Upgrade to fixed package versions such as linux-hwe 4.8.0-36.36~16.04.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 systems; restrict rsync usage to trusted servers and consider disabling client-to-server transfers where possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm rsync package version matches or exceeds the fixed release on affected systems and test transfers against known vulnerable checksum manipulation scenarios.

Typical attack path

  1. Host a malicious rsync server
  2. Induce client connection for a file transfer from client to server
  3. Transmit manipulated checksum values for chosen client files
  4. Reconstruct file data byte-by-byte from client responses

How to detect it

Review rsync client and server logs for unexpected checksum requests or transfers initiated to untrusted endpoints; correlate with process execution of rsync during file operations.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed fixed package versions immediately on all affected Ubuntu systems
  • Audit and restrict rsync server endpoints to trusted hosts only
  • Monitor rsync traffic for connections to unapproved servers

The record

A flaw was found in rsync. It could allow a server to enumerate the contents of an arbitrary file from the client's machine. This issue occurs when files are being copied from a client to a server. During this process, the rsync server will send checksums of local data to the client to compare with in order to determine what data needs to be sent to the server. By sending specially constructed checksum values for arbitrary files, an attacker may be able to reconstruct the data of those files byte-by-byte based on the responses from the client.
