What it actually does
Remote memory corruption via a crafted HTTP cookie in RomPager versions 4.34 and earlier, enabling arbitrary code execution and full privilege escalation on the device.
Why it matters to the business
Compromise of embedded networking devices such as home gateways allows attackers to intercept traffic, pivot into internal networks, or incorporate devices into botnets; high and rising EPSS signals elevated real-world exploitation risk despite the age of the flaw.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker identifies a vulnerable device, crafts a malicious cookie that triggers memory corruption in the web server, and sends it via an HTTP request to gain elevated privileges and execute arbitrary code.
How to fix it
Upgrade AllegroSoft RomPager to a patched version from the vendor or replace affected hardware; disable remote web management and restrict access to trusted networks where upgrades are impossible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect HTTP Server headers or device firmware for RomPager version 4.34 or earlier; perform controlled testing with public PoCs in isolated environments to confirm exposure or patch effectiveness.
Typical attack path
- Scan for exposed RomPager-based devices via HTTP responses or banners
- Craft a malicious cookie payload to trigger memory corruption
- Send the crafted cookie in an HTTP request to the management interface
- Achieve code execution and privilege escalation for full device control
How to detect it
Examine web server access logs on affected devices for anomalous HTTP requests containing unusual or oversized cookie values; correlate with known public exploit patterns for the Misfortune Cookie vulnerability.
- HTTP requests with malformed or oversized Cookie headers targeting RomPager endpoints
- Unexpected privilege changes or shell access following web interface interactions
What your security team should do
- Prioritize replacement or isolation of affected devices due to weaponized exploit maturity
- Block or monitor inbound traffic to device web interfaces from untrusted sources
- Review vendor firmware updates for any downstream products still using vulnerable RomPager
The record
AllegroSoft RomPager 4.34 and earlier, as used in Huawei Home Gateway products and other vendors and products, allows remote attackers to gain privileges via a crafted cookie that triggers memory corruption, aka the "Misfortune Cookie" vulnerability.
