What it actually does
Remote attacker can trigger a crash in applications using the library by providing a specially crafted JPEG image containing a malicious Exif marker, resulting in memory corruption leading to denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Service interruptions and potential data loss in image processing workflows when handling untrusted JPEG files.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malformed JPEG file with a crafted Exif marker and delivers it to a target application that uses the vulnerable libjpeg-turbo library for image processing, causing the application to crash upon parsing.
How to fix it
Upgrade libjpeg-turbo to version 1.3.1 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed version of libjpeg-turbo is at least 1.3.1 and test processing of known malicious JPEG samples.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious JPEG with Exif marker
- Deliver file to victim application
- Application parses the image triggering the flaw
- Application crashes
How to detect it
Look for application crashes or segmentation faults when processing JPEG files in logs; monitor for unusual Exif marker handling.
What your security team should do
- Update to fixed version immediately
- Implement input validation for images
- Monitor for crashes related to image processing
The record
libjpeg-turbo before 1.3.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted JPEG file, related to the Exif marker.
