What it actually does
The flaw triggers a divide-by-zero error inside alloc_sarray in jmemmgr.c when processing a malformed JPEG, crashing the application that uses the libjpeg library.
Why it matters to the business
Applications that decode untrusted images can be forced offline or into repeated restarts, interrupting services that rely on image upload, preview, or processing workflows.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a JPEG file that forces the divide-by-zero condition during memory allocation, then delivers the file to any application built on the vulnerable libjpeg 9a or 9d code; public exploit code has been available for years, making the attack trivial once a malicious image reaches the parser.
How to fix it
Update the affected redaxo/redaxo installation to the commit 1094cf912ec7e82982505ca23f322ad12337fb25 or later; rebuild any local copies of libjpeg against a patched upstream version that guards the allocation arithmetic.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running libjpeg version is newer than 9d or that the redaxo source tree contains the referenced commit; re-test with a known triggering JPEG sample to verify the divide-by-zero no longer occurs.
Typical attack path
- Attacker creates a JPEG with specially chosen dimensions that trigger the faulty allocation path
- Attacker uploads or links the crafted image to the target application
- Application invokes libjpeg to decode the file
- alloc_sarray performs a division by zero and aborts
- Process or service crashes, causing denial of service
How to detect it
Search web-server and application logs for sudden crashes or segmentation faults that coincide with JPEG processing; inspect any uploaded image files that were present at the time of the crash for anomalous dimension values.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade redaxo/redaxo to the fixed commit across all environments
- Add the patched libjpeg to internal build pipelines and container images
- Block or sanitize image uploads until the update is deployed
- Review image-processing dependencies in other applications for the same libjpeg version
The record
An issue was discovered in libjpeg 9a and 9d. The alloc_sarray function in jmemmgr.c allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error) via a crafted file.
