What it actually does
Stack-based buffer overflow in stream_decoder.c allows remote code execution when processing a crafted .flac file.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can achieve arbitrary code execution on any system that decodes untrusted FLAC audio files, enabling malware deployment, data theft, or lateral movement across media-processing environments; high ecosystem prevalence in audio tools and players increases exposure for organizations handling media content.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malformed FLAC file that triggers the buffer overflow in the decoder; when a victim application processes the file, control flow is hijacked to execute attacker-supplied code.
How to fix it
Upgrade libFLAC to version 1.3.1 or later on all affected systems and rebuild dependent applications against the fixed library.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed libFLAC version is 1.3.1 or newer; test decoding of known-malformed test files in a sandbox and confirm absence of crashes or unexpected execution.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malicious .flac file containing oversized metadata or frame data
- Deliver the file via email, web download, or shared storage
- Victim application or library processes the file using vulnerable libFLAC
- Buffer overflow occurs and attacker payload executes
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for abnormal FLAC decoding attempts, segmentation faults, or crashes in libFLAC-linked processes; review file-access logs for recently introduced .flac files from untrusted sources.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all instances of libFLAC to 1.3.1 or newer
- Inventory and replace any embedded or statically linked copies of the library
- Restrict processing of untrusted FLAC files where feasible
- Monitor for decoder crashes or unexpected process behavior
The record
Stack-based buffer overflow in stream_decoder.c in libFLAC before 1.3.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted .flac file.
