What it actually does

Remote authenticated users can trigger a denial-of-service condition in the InnoDB storage engine by submitting crafted DML statements, causing the MySQL server process to become unavailable.

Database services experience unplanned outages that interrupt applications, reporting, and transaction processing until the server is restarted or recovered.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses valid database credentials connects to the MySQL instance and issues specially constructed INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE statements that exercise the vulnerable InnoDB DML code path, resulting in a crash or hang of the server process.

How to fix it

Upgrade MySQL Server to a version newer than 5.5.40 and 5.6.21, or apply the corresponding vendor-supplied security update for the operating system distribution in use. Restart affected instances after patching and verify that InnoDB workloads continue to function.

How to confirm the fix worked

Query the server version string and compare against the affected ranges; attempt to reproduce the reported DML pattern in a non-production environment to confirm the crash no longer occurs after the update.

1. Obtain valid MySQL credentials through prior compromise, credential stuffing, or insider access
2. Connect to the target MySQL instance over the network
3. Issue crafted DML statements targeting InnoDB tables
4. Trigger server crash or unresponsiveness, denying service to legitimate users

How to detect it

Review MySQL error logs and operating-system logs for abrupt server shutdowns or InnoDB-related assertion failures that coincide with DML activity from non-application accounts; correlate with authentication events to identify unusual query patterns.

• Apply vendor patches or upgrade MySQL immediately on all internet-facing and internal instances
• Restrict direct network access to MySQL ports to only trusted application servers
• Enforce least-privilege database accounts to limit the impact of any authenticated-user flaw
