What it actually does

Integer overflow in gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf triggers allocation of an excessively large memory buffer when processing a crafted image, resulting in a crash.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running affected GTK+ versions can experience application crashes when opening specially crafted image files, leading to loss of productivity in image-handling workflows and potential service disruption on Ubuntu and Samsung firmware deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a large image file and delivers it to a victim through email, web download, or file share; when the victim opens the file in an affected application such as eom, eog, or thunar, the integer overflow occurs during pixbuf source setup and forces an oversized allocation that crashes the process.

How to fix it

Upgrade GTK+ to version 3.9.8 or later on all affected systems; apply the latest Ubuntu security updates for canonical ubuntu linux packages and the current firmware patch for samsung x14j devices; replace or isolate unpatchable legacy deployments.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed GTK+ version is at least 3.9.8; attempt to open a test image sized to exceed the original allocation limit and confirm the application no longer crashes; review package changelogs for the integer-overflow fix.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft a large image file designed to trigger the integer overflow
  2. Deliver the file via email attachment, web page, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the file in an affected GTK+-based application
  4. gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf performs oversized allocation and crashes

How to detect it

Search application and system logs for segmentation faults or out-of-memory events occurring immediately after image file open operations in GTK+-based viewers; correlate with file-access timestamps for large image files.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all systems using canonical ubuntu linux or samsung x14j firmware for the vulnerable GTK+ library
  • Prioritize patching or upgrading to fixed GTK+ releases within the next maintenance window
  • Implement application allow-listing or sandboxing for image viewers until patches are deployed
  • Monitor crash reports from eom, eog, thunar, and similar applications for recurring large-image handling failures

The record

Integer overflow in the gdk_cairo_set_source_pixbuf function in gdk/gdkcairo.c in GTK+ before 3.9.8, as used in eom, gnome-photos, eog, gambas3, thunar, pinpoint, and possibly other applications, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a large image file, which triggers a large memory allocation.
