What it actually does
IMA attempts xattr modifications on files during early boot before the filesystem transitions from read-only, causing ext4 to initiate failing journal transactions and emit kernel warnings instead of returning an error early.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using IMA appraisal on ext4 may experience boot-time kernel warnings, potential delays, or degraded startup reliability until patched; low immediate risk given the boot-phase timing and absence from known exploitation lists.
How an attack unfolds
No realistic remote or privilege-escalation path exists; the condition surfaces only during early-boot file measurements on read-only ext4 when IMA is active, and the flaw is a missing early error return rather than an attacker-controllable code path.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing the referenced IMA early-error change; rebuild and deploy initramfs as needed; test boot on ext4 with IMA enabled.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the IMA xattr error-return fix; reproduce early-boot IMA measurement on ext4 and verify absence of ext4_journal_check_start warnings.
Typical attack path
- Boot Linux kernel with IMA appraisal enabled on ext4
- Trigger file open or measurement before filesystem is writable
- Observe ext4 journal warning instead of graceful error return
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and boot traces for ext4_journal_check_start warnings during systemd or initramfs file opens; correlate with IMA appraisal calls on ext4 mounts.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel update in environments using IMA on ext4
- Monitor boot logs for ext4 journal warnings during rollout
- Validate IMA functionality post-update in test boots
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ima: return error early if file xattr cannot be changed During early boot, the filesystem is read-only and any changes to xattrs are not allowed. This fails in case of ext4 because changing xattr starts an ext4 transaction which fails with the following warning.
