What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference occurs when virtio_gpu_fence_alloc() returns NULL under memory pressure and the caller virtio_gpu_init_submit() passes the NULL value to virtio_gpu_fence_event_create() without checking, resulting in an unconditional dereference inside the fence event creation path.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running virtualized workloads that rely on the virtio GPU driver may experience kernel crashes or denial of service when memory pressure coincides with GPU submission operations; the low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate limited real-world exploitation risk despite the recent publication.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers the vulnerable ioctl path under controlled memory pressure to force fence allocation failure; the unchecked NULL is then dereferenced during fence event creation, producing a general protection fault as demonstrated in Syzkaller fuzzing of the virtio driver.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream kernel commit that adds a NULL check after virtio_gpu_fence_alloc() before use in virtio_gpu_init_submit(); rebuild and deploy the patched kernel across all affected virtualized hosts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of the NULL-pointer guard in drivers/gpu/drm/virtio/virtgpu_submit.c around the fence allocation site and verify that repeated Syzkaller-style fuzzing or memory-pressure tests no longer produce the general protection fault.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local unprivileged access on a Linux system using the virtio GPU driver
  2. Induce memory pressure to cause virtio_gpu_fence_alloc() to return NULL
  3. Invoke virtio_gpu_execbuffer_ioctl or related submission paths
  4. Trigger the unchecked NULL dereference in virtio_gpu_fence_event_create

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg output for oops messages referencing virtio_gpu_fence_event_create or virtio_gpu_init_submit with KASAN null-ptr-deref reports; correlate with processes invoking drm ioctl calls under memory pressure.

  • virtio_gpu_fence_event_create
  • virtio_gpu_init_submit
  • Oops: general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address
  • KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000090-0x0000000000000097]
  • RIP: 0010:virtio_gpu_execbuffer_ioctl

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates for any hosts exposing virtio GPU devices within the next maintenance window
  • Monitor kernel oops and panic logs for virtio_gpu_fence_event_create crashes as an interim detection measure
  • Limit untrusted local access to systems using the virtio GPU driver until patches are deployed

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/virtio: fix NULL pointer dereference on fence allocation failure virtio_gpu_fence_alloc() can fail due to memory pressure and return NULL, but its caller like virtio_gpu_init_submit() never checks it. Later, virtio_gpu_init_submit() passes the NULL fence to virtio_gpu_fence_event_create(), which unconditionally dereferences it.
