What it actually does

Uninitialized stream_config structure passed to sdw_stream_add_slave() allows garbage data in the type field to be copied into stream->type by sdw_config_stream(), resulting in undefined behavior in the Linux kernel ASoC rt712-sdca-dmic SoundWire audio codec driver.

Why it matters to the business

Low-risk kernel instability or audio driver crashes on affected Linux systems; minimal operational disruption expected given low EPSS, no KEV listing, and stable trend over 30 days.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers audio stream initialization in the rt712-sdca-dmic driver; the uninitialized type value propagates through sdw_config_stream() leading to memory corruption or invalid stream handling, though no public exploits or threat actors are associated.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream kernel commit that zero-initializes stream_config before sdw_stream_add_slave() and replaces open-coded logic with snd_sdw_params_to_config(); rebuild and deploy updated kernels containing this fix.

How to confirm the fix worked

Inspect the rt712-sdca-dmic driver source for explicit zero-initialization of the stream_config structure and use of the snd_sdw_params_to_config helper; verify the patch is present in running kernel trees.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local code execution on a Linux system using the rt712-sdca-dmic codec
  2. Trigger SoundWire stream setup via user-space audio APIs
  3. Leverage resulting undefined behavior for denial of service or limited memory corruption

How to detect it

Review kernel logs and crash dumps for references to sdw_stream_add_slave or rt712-sdca-dmic stream configuration failures; no known exploitation artifacts exist due to lack of public attacks or ransomware usage.

What your security team should do

  • Update Linux kernels on systems with Realtek rt712 audio hardware as part of standard patching cycles
  • Monitor kernel logs for audio codec or SoundWire related panics
  • Treat as low priority given 17-day publication age, EPSS of 0.00175 with no trend, and absence from KEV

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: codecs: rt712-sdca-dmic: fix uninitialized stream_config->type stream_config is not initialized before being passed to sdw_stream_add_slave(). The type field may contain garbage and is later copied to stream->type by sdw_config_stream(). Zero-initialize stream_config so type defaults to SDW_STREAM_PCM. While at it, use snd_sdw_params_to_config() helper instead of open-coding the same logic.
