What it actually does
The flaw permits memory reordering around LL/SC atomic loops on MIPS I6500 cores when WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC is not selected, violating the full-ordering contract of arch_cmpxchg and allowing subsequent loads to dereference invalid addresses.
Why it matters to the business
Systems on affected MIPS hardware can suffer sudden kernel crashes during routine pipe or mutex operations, causing unplanned downtime and potential loss of in-flight data in multi-process workloads.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker compiles and runs a tight read/write loop on anonymous pipes (or any LL/SC-based primitive) on an I6500 core; the CPU reorders the load after the LL/SC pair, producing a kernel paging fault that crashes the system.
How to fix it
Rebuild the kernel with CONFIG_EYEQ selecting CONFIG_WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC so that sync barriers are emitted around LL/SC loops; apply the referenced commit that enforces this selection for I6500 configurations.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect .config for CONFIG_WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC=y on EYEQ builds, run the supplied pipe_race reproducer under load, and confirm absence of paging faults with BadVA 0x0 in the kernel log.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell on an I6500-based MIPS system
- Execute concurrent processes performing repeated pipe reads and writes
- Trigger the anon_pipe_read path containing the unsynchronized LL/SC loop
- Rely on hardware reordering to produce an invalid memory reference
- Observe kernel oops and system halt
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for strings indicating anon_pipe_read faults on MIPS I6500 hardware, including references to BadVA 0000000000000000 and the specific EPC address shown in the oops.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel rebuild and deployment for all I6500/EYEQ deployments within the next maintenance window
- Add CONFIG_WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC to mandatory kernel configuration checks
- Monitor kernel logs for MIPS I6500 oops signatures until patches are applied
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mips: select CONFIG_WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC from CONFIG_EYEQ On I6500 CPU cores, lld and scd give no ordering guarantees (same as all other instructions). To respect the assumption that arch_cmpxchg() is fully ordered, we must inject sync instructions above and below our lld/scd loops using the already in place WEAK_REORDERING_BEYOND_LLSC infrastructure.
