What it actually does

Flaw in the Sound component allows crafted audio data to trigger a partial denial of service when processed by the Java runtime.

Why it matters to the business

Client-side Java applications that load untrusted content may experience brief unavailability, potentially interrupting user workflows in sandboxed environments such as applets or Web Start apps.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts malicious audio data and delivers it over the network; a user must then interact with the content (for example by loading a sandboxed applet), after which the Sound component mishandles the data and produces a partial denial of service.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Oracle Critical Patch Update that addresses the Sound component issue; remove or restrict Java Web Start and applet execution where feasible; enforce least-privilege sandbox policies.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify that installed Java runtimes are updated past the affected versions (8u503, 11.0.32.1, 17.0.20.1, 21.0.12.1, 25.0.4.1 and corresponding GraalVM releases); retest applet or Web Start workloads with known-malicious test cases if available.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares malicious audio payload
  2. Payload is hosted or served over network protocols reachable by the target
  3. Target user loads the content inside a sandboxed Java client application
  4. Sound component processes the payload and triggers partial denial of service

How to detect it

Review Java application logs and crash reports for unexpected Sound component errors or availability drops following user-initiated loading of external content; correlate with network logs showing delivery of audio files to client systems.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of client Java deployments that execute untrusted code
  • Disable Java applets and Web Start in browsers and mail clients where business requirements permit
  • Monitor Oracle CPU release notes for the exact fixed versions once published
  • Review sandbox policies to limit network and file access for Java applications

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Java SE (component: Sound). Supported versions that are affected are Oracle Java SE: 8u503, 8u503-perf, 11.0.32.1, 17.0.20.1, 21.0.12.1, 25.0.4.1, 27; Oracle GraalVM for JDK: 17.0.20.1 and 21.0.12.1; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 21.3.19.1.1. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Successful attacks require human interaction from a person other than the attacker. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Note: This vulnerability applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. This vulnerability does not apply to Java deployments, typically in servers, that load and run only trusted code (e.g., code installed by an administrator). CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.1 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).
