What it actually does
In transition states lacking a valid dm_stream_ctx, the AMD display driver proceeds with HDCP configuration routines that require a populated stream context, resulting in improper input validation and potential invalid memory access or null dereference within the Linux kernel drm/amd/display subsystem.
Why it matters to the business
May cause graphics subsystem instability or kernel-level crashes on AMD GPU systems during display state changes, leading to downtime or degraded user experience; low exploit likelihood and no known campaigns reduce immediate operational risk.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers display mode or stream transitions (for example via graphics API calls or monitor hotplug events) to reach the vulnerable transition state, causing the driver to invoke HDCP configuration without a valid context; no public exploits or threat actors are associated with this issue.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel patch that adds the transition-state check to skip HDCP configuration; rebuild and deploy updated kernel packages across affected Linux distributions; monitor for official backports once released.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of the skip logic in drm/amd/display source after patching; confirm no HDCP configuration attempts occur in transition states via driver logging or code review; test display hotplug and mode-setting operations for stability.
Typical attack path
- Identify or control a Linux system with AMD display hardware
- Force repeated display stream state transitions through graphics workloads or configuration changes
- Trigger the HDCP configuration path while dm_stream_ctx remains invalid
- Induce kernel fault or undefined behavior during the invalid routine execution
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs and dmesg output for AMD display driver faults or warnings referencing HDCP configuration during stream transitions; correlate with display-related process activity or mode-setting events; no ransomware or KEV indicators apply.
- drm/amd/display.*HDCP.*transition
- dm_stream_ctx.*null
- amdgpu.*hdcp_config
What your security team should do
- Track Linux kernel updates from distribution vendors for this fix
- Prioritize deployment on systems with AMD GPUs handling frequent display changes
- Review graphics driver logs for related faults as a temporary detection measure
- Maintain standard kernel hardening and update cadence given low EPSS
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Skip Update HDCP Config In Transition State Transition state does not have a valid dm_stream_ctx that should skip configuring HDCP routine. The routine is valid to go through only when a valid stream is created.
