What it actually does
The amdgpu SDMA7.0 driver used BUG_ON() assertions that unconditionally panicked the kernel on certain non-fatal conditions instead of logging a warning and continuing.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected kernel crashes on systems with AMD GPUs can cause unplanned downtime, loss of workloads, and require manual recovery, especially in graphics or compute environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the specific driver paths containing the BUG_ON() calls through crafted GPU commands, buffer submissions, or resource exhaustion, forcing an immediate kernel panic and denial of service.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 9723a8bed3aa251a26bee4583bac9d8fb064dd44 (or the cherry-pick for sdma7.0) so that WARN_ON() replaces BUG_ON().
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the kernel source contains the replacement of BUG_ON() with WARN_ON() in drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/sdma7_0.c and verify the system boots and runs GPU workloads without forced panics under the previously problematic conditions.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local or remote access to a system with an affected AMD GPU
- Submit specially constructed SDMA operations or allocate resources to hit the guarded code paths
- Trigger the BUG_ON() condition leading to immediate kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for BUG_ON-triggered panic messages referencing amdgpu or sdma7.0; no specific post-exploitation artifacts exist after the panic occurs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all AMD GPU hosts within standard patch cycles
- Monitor upstream stable kernel releases for the backported fix
- Test GPU driver workloads after update to ensure continued operation
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amdgpu/sdma7.0: replace BUG_ON() with WARN_ON() There's no need to crash the kernel for these cases. (cherry picked from commit 9723a8bed3aa251a26bee4583bac9d8fb064dd44)
