What it actually does
Missing range validation on the panel_type2 field in the LFP Data Block allows invalid or out-of-range values to be used during panel type selection, leading to incorrect helper logic and potential invalid memory or state access in the i915 DRM driver.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Intel graphics hardware may experience unexpected kernel-level failures or instability when processing certain firmware-provided display configuration data, increasing operational risk for graphics-dependent workloads.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to supply or modify LFP Data Block contents (via crafted VBIOS, firmware, or hardware) provides an out-of-range panel_type2 value; the kernel code then skips validation and proceeds with unsafe panel type selection, potentially triggering crashes or undefined behavior.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c9ebe5d2f25729d6cfbbb1235d640bf67f9275df or equivalent that introduces is_panel_type_pnp and related range checks for panel_type2.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the added range-check helpers and panel_type2 validation logic in drm/i915/bios.c; test with deliberately out-of-range panel_type2 values to ensure rejection occurs before selection.
Typical attack path
- Identify or control a system with vulnerable i915 DRM code handling LFP Data Block
- Craft or inject an LFP Data Block containing an out-of-range panel_type2 value
- Trigger BIOS/display initialization path in the kernel
- Observe resulting invalid panel selection or memory access
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs and dmesg for i915 BIOS parsing messages around panel type selection; look for any prior crashes or warnings during display initialization that reference LFP Data Block.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems with Intel i915 graphics that parse LFP Data Blocks
- Monitor upstream stable and distribution kernel releases for backports of the range-check patch
- Review boot logs for i915 panel selection anomalies as an interim indicator
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/i915/bios: range check LFP Data Block panel_type2 While the panel_type from LFP Data Block is range checked, panel_type2 is not. Add a few helpers for range checking, and use them to not only check panel_type2, but also improve clarity and correctness in the panel type selection. Discovered using AI-assisted static analysis confirmed by Intel Product Security. v2: - Fix commit message typo (Michał) - Add is_panel_type_pnp() (Ville) (cherry picked from commit c9ebe5d2f25729d6cfbbb1235d640bf67f9275df)
