What it actually does
URLs in documents can be constructed to bypass incomplete name-matching checks on the package content provider, triggering expansion of environment variables or INI file values and sending the resulting sensitive data to a remote server.
Why it matters to the business
Users who open crafted documents risk leaking environment or configuration details to attackers, which could enable follow-on attacks or regulatory exposure; 41 days after publication with no known exploitation reduces immediate urgency but still requires prompt attention.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker embeds a specially formatted URL in a document that names the package content provider differently than the prior check expects; when the victim opens the document the expansion occurs and data is exfiltrated to an attacker server.
How to fix it
Apply vendor updates that ensure the package content provider is correctly matched during URL validation before any expansion occurs.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the software version includes the corrected URL check logic; test with sample documents containing variant package-content-provider URLs to verify expansion no longer occurs.
Typical attack path
- Craft document containing maliciously named URL referencing package content provider
- Deliver document to target via email or file share
- Victim opens document triggering URL processing
- Environment or INI values expand and sensitive data is sent outbound
How to detect it
Review document-viewer process logs and outbound network connections for URLs that reference package content providers or trigger environment/INI expansion; correlate with file-open events on endpoints.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize deployment of the vendor fix across document-handling endpoints
- Monitor vendor advisory channels for the exact fixed versions when published
- Temporarily restrict opening of untrusted documents until patches are applied
The record
URLs could be constructed which expanded environment variable or INI file values, so potentially sensitive information could be exfiltrated to a remote server on opening a document containing such links. The check added for CVE-2024-12426 did not recognise every way of naming the package content provider, so a URL that named it differently still reached the expansion. In fixed versions the package content provider is matched when the URL is checked.
