What it actually does
This is a Linux kernel memory-corruption flaw in the mailbox test driver. When the mailbox-test code allocates TX and RX channels, the RX channel can be an alias of the TX channel under a special MMIO configuration. The vulnerable cleanup path does not recognize that both references point to the same underlying channel and can free it twice. A double-free in kernel space can corrupt kernel heap state, leading to kernel crash, denial of service, or, in less likely circumstances, controlled memory corruption that could support privilege escalation if an attacker can reliably trigger and shape the allocation pattern. The practical exposure is likely limited to systems that build, load, or expose the mailbox-test driver and relevant mailbox hardware/test configuration.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation could crash affected Linux systems or destabilize kernel memory handling, causing service interruption on workloads that depend on those hosts. Because the issue is in a kernel test/driver path rather than a common remotely exposed network service, broad internet-scale exploitation is unlikely based on the currently low EPSS score, absence from the CISA KEV catalog, and no known public exploit maturity. The main business risk is operational disruption or local privilege abuse on systems where the vulnerable driver is present and accessible.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first needs access to a system running an affected Linux kernel where the mailbox-test driver is available, loaded, or can be loaded, and where the attacker has enough local capability to interact with the relevant driver/debug/test interface or influence mailbox channel setup. The attacker then causes the mailbox-test driver to request TX and RX channels in a configuration where the RX channel is effectively the same object as the TX channel but appears through a different MMIO path. During teardown or error handling, the vulnerable code frees both channel references independently. Because both references may resolve to the same underlying channel, the second free corrupts kernel memory-management state. In the most straightforward case this triggers a kernel warning, panic, or crash. A more advanced attacker would try to groom kernel heap allocations before and after the double-free to turn the memory corruption into a controlled write/use-after-free primitive, but no mature public exploitation is currently indicated.
How to fix it
Apply the Linux kernel update from the operating system or appliance vendor that includes the upstream fix for the mailbox-test double-free. If exact fixed package versions are not available from the advisory data, track the vendor kernel advisory for CVE-2026-53294 and update to the first kernel release that contains the change described as preventing mailbox-test from freeing a reused/aliased channel. As a mitigation where immediate patching is not possible, disable or unload the mailbox-test driver if it is not required, avoid building it into production kernels, restrict module loading to trusted administrators, and limit access to debugfs or any mailbox-test interfaces. Reboot after kernel update or module mitigation where required so the vulnerable code is no longer resident.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel has been updated to a vendor release that includes the mailbox-test double-free fix, not only that a package has been installed. Check whether the mailbox-test driver is present or loaded using kernel configuration, module inventory, and runtime module checks. Validate that unneeded test modules are not loaded in production and that unprivileged users cannot load kernel modules or access relevant debug/test driver interfaces. In engineering or lab environments, KASAN/KFENCE-enabled test kernels can be used to exercise mailbox-test channel allocation and teardown paths and confirm that double-free reports no longer occur. Review distribution changelogs or source patches for logic that avoids freeing the RX channel when it is the same/reused channel as TX.
Typical attack path
- Identify a Linux host running an affected kernel with the mailbox-test driver built in or available as a loadable module.
- Obtain local access with sufficient privileges or device/debug interface access to load, configure, or exercise the mailbox-test driver.
- Trigger a mailbox-test configuration where the RX channel aliases the TX channel while using a distinct MMIO mapping.
- Cause channel cleanup, module unload, probe failure, or another teardown path that frees both channel references.
- Leverage the resulting double-free to crash the kernel, or attempt heap grooming to convert the corruption into privilege escalation.
How to detect it
To determine whether this was already triggered, review kernel logs and persistent journal data for mailbox-test activity followed by memory-corruption diagnostics, kernel oops, panic, slab allocator errors, or KASAN double-free reports. Useful sources include dmesg output, /var/log/kern.log, /var/log/messages, systemd journal entries for the kernel, crash dump metadata, kdump/vmcore analysis, EDR kernel telemetry, and module load audit events. Look for module load or unload events involving mailbox-test shortly before kernel instability. If auditd or EDR records module activity, investigate any unexpected insertion of mailbox-test by non-standard administrative workflows. Because no public exploit artifacts or threat actor tradecraft are known for this CVE, detection should focus on kernel memory-corruption symptoms and suspicious access to test/debug kernel components rather than network indicators.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems that run custom kernels, embedded Linux, hardware enablement kernels, or platforms where mailbox drivers and test modules are enabled.
- Inventory whether CONFIG_MAILBOX_TEST or the mailbox-test module is present in production kernels; remove or disable it unless explicitly required.
- Restrict kernel module loading to trusted administrators and monitor for unexpected loading of mailbox-test or other test/debug kernel modules.
- Review kernel logs for double-free, KASAN, slab corruption, oops, or panic messages involving mailbox-test, especially on systems that recently loaded or unloaded mailbox-related modules.
- Treat this as lower internet-exploitation urgency because it is not in CISA KEV, is not known to be ransomware-used, has low EPSS, and has no known exploit maturity; nevertheless, handle it through normal kernel patch SLAs due to kernel memory-corruption risk.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mailbox: mailbox-test: don't free the reused channel The RX channel can be aliased to the TX channel if it has a different MMIO. This special case needs to be handled when freeing the channels otherwise a double-free occurs.
