What it actually does
CVE-2026-50359 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability caused by a use-after-free condition in Microsoft XML Core Services on affected Windows client and server versions. An authenticated local attacker with low privileges can trigger unsafe object lifetime handling in the MSXML component and potentially execute code with elevated privileges. The CVSS vector indicates local access is required, exploitation complexity is high, no user interaction is required, and successful exploitation can compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability at the elevated privilege level.
Why it matters to the business
If exploited, this flaw can let an attacker who already has a foothold on a Windows system gain higher privileges, helping them disable defenses, access sensitive data, install persistence, or move laterally. It is not remotely exploitable by itself and currently has low EPSS, no known KEV listing, no reported ransomware use, and no public exploit maturity, but it affects a broad range of supported Windows desktop and server versions, so unpatched systems can still create meaningful risk when combined with phishing, credential theft, or malware execution.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first needs authenticated local access to an affected Windows system, typically obtained through stolen credentials, malware execution, abuse of a low-privileged account, or another vulnerability. From that local foothold, the attacker invokes functionality that uses Microsoft XML Core Services in a way that triggers the use-after-free condition. By carefully shaping memory before and after the freed object is reused, the attacker may redirect execution flow or corrupt process state to run attacker-controlled code with elevated privileges. Once privilege escalation succeeds, the attacker can perform follow-on actions such as dumping credentials, tampering with security tooling, creating privileged accounts, installing services or scheduled tasks, and accessing protected files or processes.
How to fix it
Apply the Microsoft security update that addresses CVE-2026-50359 for all affected Windows versions, including Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2022, and Windows Server 2025. Because no specific fixed build numbers were provided, use Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services, Microsoft Configuration Manager, or the Microsoft Update Catalog to deploy the relevant cumulative security update for the affected operating system release. Prioritize servers and workstations where low-privileged users can log on interactively, systems exposed to untrusted code execution, shared jump hosts, VDI environments, developer workstations, and high-value administrative endpoints. If immediate patching is not possible, reduce risk by limiting local logon rights, enforcing least privilege, restricting execution of untrusted scripts and binaries, enabling application control, keeping endpoint detection controls active, and monitoring for suspicious privilege escalation and post-exploitation activity.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm that each affected Windows system has installed the Microsoft security update that includes the fix for CVE-2026-50359. Validate through Windows Update history, enterprise patch management reports, Microsoft Defender Vulnerability Management, authenticated vulnerability scans, or PowerShell queries such as Get-HotFix compared against the applicable Microsoft security update guidance for the OS build. Confirm the system is on a supported servicing branch and that cumulative updates are successfully applied after reboot. Where possible, run an authenticated scanner that explicitly checks this CVE. Do not rely on the presence of MSXML DLLs alone, because they are normal Windows components; validation should be based on OS build, cumulative update level, and vendor advisory status.
Typical attack path
- Gain low-privileged local access to an affected Windows client or server.
- Execute a crafted local program or script that interacts with Microsoft XML Core Services.
- Trigger the use-after-free condition in the MSXML component.
- Manipulate memory layout to convert the memory corruption into elevated code execution.
- Use the elevated privileges to disable controls, access sensitive data, establish persistence, or move laterally.
How to detect it
There are no reliable public, CVE-specific indicators of compromise for this vulnerability at this time, and exploitation is local, so network-based detection is unlikely to be effective. To determine whether it was already exploited, review endpoint telemetry and Windows event logs for suspicious activity that occurs after a low-privileged process interacts with XML/MSXML-related functionality and is followed by elevated execution. Useful sources include EDR process lineage, Windows Security logs, Sysmon logs, PowerShell logs, service creation events, scheduled task events, local group membership changes, Defender/EDR tamper alerts, and file creation in startup or service paths. Hunt for signs of post-exploitation rather than the memory corruption itself: unexpected elevation from a standard user context, abnormal parent-child process relationships, newly created privileged users, additions to local Administrators, credential dumping tools, disabled security services, suspicious DLL drops, new autoruns, and lateral movement attempts. Correlate any findings with patch status; unpatched systems with unexplained privilege changes or suspicious local code execution should be treated as higher priority for forensic review.
What your security team should do
- Patch affected Windows client and server systems using the applicable Microsoft cumulative security update, prioritizing systems that allow interactive user logon or process untrusted content.
- Use authenticated vulnerability scanning or endpoint vulnerability management to identify remaining exposure across Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server fleets.
- Increase monitoring for local privilege escalation behavior on unpatched or high-value systems, especially unusual child processes, new services, scheduled tasks, credential access, and security control tampering.
- Apply least-privilege controls: remove unnecessary local administrator rights, restrict local logon permissions, and harden service accounts.
- Enforce application control or attack surface reduction policies to reduce the chance that a low-privileged attacker can run exploit code.
- Correlate any suspected exploitation with evidence of initial access, because this vulnerability requires a prior local foothold.
- Track Microsoft advisory updates for fixed build details, exploitability assessment changes, or any future evidence of active exploitation.
The record
Use after free in Microsoft XML Core Services allows an authorized attacker to elevate privileges locally.
