What it actually does
This is a Linux kernel memory-safety/undefined-behavior flaw in the Switchtec NTB driver. When the number of memory-window lookup-table entries is zero, the driver can call a power-of-two rounding operation on an invalid value, causing a shift-out-of-bounds condition. In kernel context, that can lead to a kernel warning or oops, denial of service, and potentially exposure of sensitive kernel memory depending on build options, compiler behavior, and surrounding runtime state. Exploitation requires local access with enough privilege to interact with the affected NTB/Switchtec hardware or driver path; it is not a remote network-entry vulnerability.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Linux kernels with Switchtec NTB hardware or the ntb_hw_switchtec driver may be vulnerable to local disruption or possible sensitive data exposure. The operational risk is highest for specialized servers, appliances, embedded systems, storage, PCIe fabric, or high-availability platforms that use NTB/Switchtec hardware. Public exploitation is not currently reported, EPSS is very low and flat, and it is not in the CISA KEV catalog, but kernel-level flaws should still be remediated through normal patch cycles because a successful exploit can affect system stability and confidentiality.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker first needs local access to a host running an affected Linux kernel where the Switchtec NTB driver is present and reachable. The attacker then attempts to exercise the NTB/Switchtec configuration or initialization path in a state where the number of memory-window LUT entries is zero. The vulnerable driver performs a power-of-two rounding operation without validating that the value is nonzero, causing a shift-out-of-bounds condition in kernel code. Depending on kernel configuration and runtime behavior, this may trigger a UBSAN warning, kernel oops, panic, driver failure, or potentially expose sensitive kernel memory. There are no known public exploits or named threat actors associated with this issue at this time.
How to fix it
Apply a Linux kernel update that includes the upstream fix for the Switchtec NTB driver validation bug. If using a distribution kernel, upgrade to the vendor-provided patched kernel when available and reboot into the fixed kernel. If maintaining a custom kernel, apply the patch that prevents rounddown_pow_of_two from being called when the number of memory-window LUT entries is zero. Where patching is delayed, reduce exposure by disabling or unloading the ntb_hw_switchtec driver if it is not required, blocking untrusted local users from accessing relevant device nodes, and limiting administrative access to systems with Switchtec NTB hardware. No exact fixed package versions were provided in the input, so remediation should be tracked against the relevant Linux distribution or kernel branch advisory.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the system is running a kernel build that contains the NTB Switchtec fix, not merely that the package has been installed. Validate with the running kernel version, distribution advisory status, or source/package changelog referencing the ntb_hw_switchtec zero MW LUT fix. Check whether the vulnerable driver is present or loaded using module and kernel configuration inspection. If Switchtec NTB functionality is required, perform controlled functional testing after patching to ensure NTB devices initialize normally and no kernel warnings, UBSAN reports, oopses, or panics occur. If the driver is not required, verify it cannot be loaded automatically and that no Switchtec NTB device paths are exposed to untrusted local users.
Typical attack path
- Gain local access to a Linux system running an affected kernel.
- Confirm that Switchtec NTB hardware or the ntb_hw_switchtec driver is present or loadable.
- Reach the NTB/Switchtec driver path through device interaction, driver initialization, or configuration changes.
- Trigger a zero-memory-window-LUT condition in the vulnerable code path.
- Cause kernel undefined behavior, potentially resulting in a crash, service disruption, or sensitive information exposure.
- Use the resulting instability or leaked information to support further local attack objectives, if feasible.
How to detect it
Look for signs that the affected driver path was exercised and caused kernel undefined behavior or instability. Primary sources are kernel logs, system journal, dmesg output, crash dumps, kdump/vmcore artifacts, system watchdog logs, and EDR telemetry for unexpected reboots or kernel panics. Search for UBSAN reports, shift-out-of-bounds messages, kernel oopses, panics, stack traces referencing ntb_hw_switchtec, and Switchtec NTB initialization errors. Review module load history and audit logs for ntb_hw_switchtec being loaded unexpectedly. Also investigate local user activity immediately before kernel crashes, especially commands or processes interacting with PCIe, NTB, Switchtec, sysfs, debugfs, or device-management tooling. There are no known threat actors or public exploit campaigns tied to this vulnerability, so detection should focus on kernel error artifacts rather than known malware indicators.

What your security team should do
- Inventory Linux systems for Switchtec NTB hardware and the ntb_hw_switchtec driver; prioritize systems where the driver is loaded or the hardware is present.
- Patch affected Linux kernels through normal kernel update channels and reboot into the fixed kernel.
- For custom kernels, ensure the specific upstream driver fix is backported and rebuilt.
- If NTB/Switchtec functionality is not needed, disable or blacklist the ntb_hw_switchtec module as a compensating control.
- Restrict local shell, sudo, container escape, and device-node access on systems with specialized PCIe/NTB hardware.
- Monitor kernel logs for ntb_hw_switchtec, Switchtec, UBSAN, shift-out-of-bounds, oops, panic, or unexpected reboot events.
- Because EPSS is very low, no public exploit maturity is reported, and the issue is not KEV-listed, prioritize based on hardware exposure and operational criticality rather than emergency internet-wide response.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ntb: ntb_hw_switchtec: Fix shift-out-of-bounds for 0 mw lut Number of MW LUTs depends on NTB configuration and can be set to zero, in such scenario rounddown_pow_of_two will cause undefined behaviour and should not be performed. This patch ensures that rounddown_pow_of_two is called on valid value.
