What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in ice_vsi_set_napi_queues when rings[q_idx]->q_vector is NULL during PCI resume from suspend, causing kernel oops in netif_queue_set_napi on Intel E810 adapters regardless of SR-IOV state.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Intel Ethernet controllers experience kernel crashes on every resume from suspend, producing unplanned downtime and requiring reboots on servers, workstations, and embedded devices that rely on suspend/resume cycles.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local shell access on a vulnerable kernel invokes suspend (via systemctl, rtcwake, or power management APIs); on resume the ice driver calls ice_vsi_set_napi_queues without checking for unmapped q_vectors, dereferencing a NULL pointer and triggering a fatal kernel NULL pointer dereference.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to the commit d75c7b7c3c2b8e3569043099e6bdcefc983856c5 or later stable releases that contain the added NULL checks for ring and q_vector pointers in ice_vsi_set_napi_queues.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit d75c7b7c3c2b8e3569043099e6bdcefc983856c5; attempt suspend/resume cycle on hardware with Intel E810 controllers and verify no NULL pointer oops appears in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user or root shell on target Linux system
- Trigger system suspend (systemctl suspend, rtcwake, or equivalent)
- Allow or force resume from suspend
- Kernel panics in ice driver during device resume
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference combined with netif_queue_set_napi or ice_resume call traces; examine audit or power-management logs for preceding suspend/resume events on systems with ice driver loaded.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing the referenced commit on all systems exposing Intel E810 or similar ice-based NICs
- Temporarily disable suspend/resume on affected hosts if patching cannot be performed immediately
- Monitor kernel logs for 'ice_vsi_set_napi_queues' and 'netif_queue_set_napi' symbols during resume events
